Last year we baked our way through the lectionary texts as a way of diving into the Scriptural paths that lead us to the celebration of Christmas. This year, I thought it would be fun to take a different approach and use our baking as a way of diving deeply into some of the people and characters that make this story one that while told year over year still does not get old. As I have been selecting and refining the recipes to include this year, I thought a lot about the people behind the Gospel accounts. What kind of person would John the Baptist have been? What kind of wisdom did Elizabeth share with the scared young Mary? How did Mary understand what kind of impact she was going to have? How did Joseph understand his role as the adoptive father of Jesus?
Many of these questions are not in the Scriptures, and no amount of exegesis can answer them definitively, but the act of Biblical imagination is a tool that is deeply rooted within our faith and is one that I think lends itself well to being done while creaming together butter and sugar or while snacking on some leftover chocolate chips while cookies bake in the oven.
I hope that you join us for this exciting adventure of contemplative baking!
